Allo is Google's new message

Mixed messages

One of the 2016's trends has been a shift in emphasis away from social media (one to many) and towards messaging (one to one or one to few). Google has now revealed its updated messaging strategy and has earned praise for its engineering along with skepticism about its privacy.

Two new apps were announced. Allo is primarily a text/image messenger and Duo specializes in video chat. Allo has received most of the attention so far and Google's passion for artificial intelligence gives it some impressive features. Silicon Angle reviewed the full feature set for Allo.

The monetization plan appears to be based on using Google Assistant to enter the conversation and to make suggestions as to where users can buy things. Since Google needs to listen in to do this it has made end-to-end encryption optional and earned a rebuke from Edward Snowden, among others. Google security expert Thai Duong took to his blog to analyze the dynamics of privacy when trying to find profit in a few words between friends.
